2) Campus Crime "Hot Spots"
Once again, the crime of Larceny is the most frequently occurring crime
on the WSU campus. During February 2001, 54 incidents of Larceny were
reported in a total of 24 different campus buildings. The most frequent
locations were: Scott Hall (Medical School) - 7 incidents, Purdy Library
with 6 incidents, UGL with 5 incidents and the Fitness Center with 4
incidents. All of these incidents involved the theft of personal items of
value left unattended for a brief period of time. Larceny is the easiest
crime to prevent and one of the hardest to solve. This crime takes only
seconds to commit and no time/effort for you to prevent. Please do not
leave anything of value unattended anywhere on campus.
One (unarmed) robbery was reported to the WSU Police in February. This
case involved a purse snatching close to the WSU Medical School on
February 15th near the entrance to the University Health Center (UHC) at
4201 St. Antoine. The 50 year old victim reports she was walking toward
the UHC at 7:30 am when she passed the perpetrator who was walking in the
other direction. As they passed each other, the subject grabbed the
victims purse. The victim resisted and the perpetrator threw her to the
ground. The subject tore the purse from the victims grip and was last seen
running northbound on St. Antoine from E. Canfield.
Although this incident did not occur on WSU property per se, it is
still of concern and illustrates that crime can occur at any time of the
day. The perpetrator of this incident is described as a black male, 20-25
years of age, 5'6" to 5'10", mustache, facial scaring or 'bad acne' on
the left side of his face. He was wearing a dark colored baseball cap, a
hooded black jacket with some type of logo or emblem on the left front
side and dark colored pants.
